8/29/13 - It's A .......
Hi Everyone! We have exciting news to share :)
We had our 20 week ultrasound this past Saturday and have included a video and some pics to announce our big news of what we are having :) We are thrilled to hear the baby is healthy and there are no concerns from our Doctor. Praise The Lord! We couldn't be happier! Thank you for your prayers as well!

Also, this week we had a very encouraging one regarding Jason's health! His cancer/disease fighting cell counts are increasing. God also gave us perfect clarity upon arrival to Jas' gastro appt today (Thurs) that we would only be doing a normal stretching with no stent. The Dr. deciding he was not yet comfortable with doing the procedure on him until seeing how another patient fares it for a month or two more. Then the biggest news was his CAT scans came back clean. Praise, Praise, PRAISE THE LORD! It was wonderful to see our team again today and celebrate the news with them. Our surgeon was even explaining Jason's case history to his resident, and said, "He is a miracle in the cancer world." So cool!
It has been quite awhile since we have had so much FANTASTIC news for our family and it all happened in one week! So many things we are incredibly thankful to The Lord for!!!

This month, Patty Pollatus Fund (the organization that helped our family with fundraising this past year) is hosting their annual FUNomenon on Saturday, August 24 from 12-6pm. Lots of fun things taking place on the agenda including a rodeo, Rodney Atkins concert, tons of entertainment for kids (pony rides, moon bounce, magic show, face painting, crafts, etc.) and food all for the price of one ticket! The awesome thing is that PPF is allowing those who want to attend to have the cost of their ticket of $75/adult to go straight to Jason's account with PPF to help pay for ongoing medical expenses he is incurring. Note, that the ticket price at the gate is less because those $ go toward PPF's general operating expenses and not a recipient's fund. PPF sets the prices for both options. 8/1/13 - August is a BIG month!
Hello Everyone! It's been quite awhile :) No news is good news right? Well, we wanted to bring you all up to speed on what has been happening in our world these past handful of months!
First and foremost, we have exciting news to share with you! We are expecting an addition to our family on January 10, 2014. Surprised? Us too :) God is so good! He knew we needed a refreshing change of focus after what we have been through these past two years and how refreshing it is to focus on a new little life! Taylor is so incredibly excited to be a sister, it's precious! We just spent this last month with our parents, siblings, cousins, etc. and really had fun sharing the news in person. Taylor would put on her Big Sister shirt and just give hugs and smile and wait until others noticed our big news. After awhile if others weren't catching on she would point to the words on her shirt or even say, can you please read my shirt? Hee hee. Too funny! The cool thing is to look over this past year to see how God continued to provide us with hope as we looked to him for guidance on our future from a family planning perspective. Many months prior to us finding out I was pregnant, Taylor started to express her heart of wanting to be a big sister, at times even sobbing about it. Interesting timing. Also, the last few times over the past year that I had been asked to share my testimony at various places/groups, each time a woman would come up to me after and thank me for sharing and then proceed to tell me that her husband also had cancer, they were told they wouldn't be able to have children, and how they had been able to. The really strange thing about this all was that never in my testimony did I talk about the desire to have more children and the concern about whether or not it would ever be possible with Jas going through 2 cancers, chemo, radiation, surgeries, etc. I look back now and totally see that it was God providing hope to me along the way to hold tight to his perfect timing. So cool how he does that isn't it?
As for other highlights... Jason and I attended the 2nd Annual Believe Big Fundraising Event this spring. It was incredible to see how the Lord continues to grow this organization! There were over 500 attendees at the event. WOW! Jason was asked to share a few minutes with the audience and we have included the video of what he spoke of below. He did a great job! While they haven't raised the entire amount of $ to fund the mistletoe clinicial trial at Johns Hopkins, they raised enough to start Phase 1 which is incredibly encouraging! Also, we have been able to go on a handful of camping trips so far. Cunningham Falls, Dutch Wonderland, George Washington National Forest, etc. We are loving the camper that Jas' mom so graciously let us have and have already got a lot of use out of it. The joke is that we sleep better in the camper than our own house :) Here are a few camping trip pics.
Then we were able to head to Southport, NC for the 4th of July celebration for a few days, then to Myrtle Beach to vacation with the Gurney side, and then to Ohio to spend time with the Wiles side and other family as well. Lots of fun and memories for sure!
So coming up shortly this August, we have a BIG month ahead of us! We are approaching another round of scans for Jason, he will have a follow up with his natropath to see how his thymus is working (this produces cancer and disease fighting cells and has been on the low end these last few months), and we may be trying a new type of procedure to help keep Jas' esophagus open. Then on top of that we may be able to find out the gender of the baby. And last but not least, Jason is running the River Valley Run 10k trail race in mid-August, to celebrate how far he has come and to raise funds for Believe Big. Lastly, we wanted to ask for your prayers of protection please for our family during this month of August. Especially with our news of an addition, the evil one will be attempting to attack us with doubt and fear we know. If you would please pray the Strong and Courageous & No Fear Prayer (at the very end of the email) for our family this month, we would greatly appreciate it! We should know toward the end of this month how the scans look . Also, toward the end of the month, we are considering a new procedure for Jason. He continues to have his esophagus close and has been going in monthly for stretchings. However the opening isn't healing in the right shape. So, we are considering and praying about trying a new procedure just approved at the hospital where they would place a smaller stent in Jas' esophagus and sew it into his esophagus wall to keep it in place ideally. By using a smaller stent, our hope is that it will not cause the pain that the ones in the past have. So please pray for God's clarity on whether to proceed with this procedure or not and for ultimate healing of his esophagus - to stay wide OPEN!

Because of Your Word, Jason and Megan are overcomers. They overcome the world, the flesh and the devil by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Greater are You, Lord that is in them than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4, Rev. 12:11) You came that they may have life, and have it in abundance. (John 10:10) You are a shield for them, their glory, and the lifter of their head.(Psalm 3:3) You always lead them in triumphal procession and through them you are able to spread the knowledge of who You are. (2 Cor. 2:14)
Jason and Megan will set their dwelling in and among You, and their soul shall not despise, reject or separate itself from you. (Leviticus 26:11) Amid all these things they are more than a conqueror and gain a surpassing victory through You who love them. (Romans 8:37) No weapon that is formed against them shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against them in judgment You shall show to be in the wrong. This peace, righteousness, security, triumph over opposition is the heritage that they have through You. (Isaiah 54:17)
Though Jason and Megan live in the world, they will not wage war as the world does. The weapons they fight with are not the weapons of the world. They have divine power to demolish strongholds. (2 Corinthians 10:3,4) They will put on the full armor of God so that they can take a stand against the devil’s schemes. They will stand firm with the belt of truth around their waist, with the breastplate of righteousness, their feet ready with peace, the shield of faith to extinguish the arrows from the devil, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is Your word. They will be alert and will always be praying. (Ephesians 6)

4/24/13 - Prayers Please! 2 Stents to Come Out This Wednesday
Hi Everyone!
We wanted to get a couple urgent prayer requests out there and ask for your help please.
This may come to many as a surprise to many, as our last post was to let everyone know how well the stent was working for Jas since March 1. Well, since then the stent fell out of place and is more than likely sitting in his stomach right now.
So on April 12 we headed back to the hospital with plans to have the 1st stent retrieved and a 2nd stent put into place. Well, things didn't go quite as we planned :) They never do, do they? HAHA. So our Dr. decided to put a stent in that was 2mm larger than the last one. Doesn't seem like a big deal does it? Oh but it was! It was larger than he had even ever been stretched. So, he experienced severe, intense pain from the moment he had the new stent placed :( So the poor guy has felt, "like a dull knife has been stuck in the middle of his back" since April 12. He hasn't been able to sleep laying down in bed since then - having to sit upright in a chair at night and can only sleep for a couple hours at a time due to the intense pain. We know that narcotics just make him sick so he has steered clear of those, but nothing else is giving him much relief. And to make matters worse, it is making all the areas that he was operated on for his esophagectomy feel much worse again... And are you wondering about the stent that fell into his stomach? Well, because of stretching his esophagus to the largest yet for the new stent, our Dr. didn't want to add additional salt to the wound by having to stretch it that wide twice that day to remove the other one. So, the 2nd stent still remains in his stomach.
Now this is where prayer request #1 comes in. Jas heads back to the hospital this Wednesday, April 24 for an 8am appt with plans to remove the stent in his stomach AND the stent that is causing this awful pain. If you could please please blanket him in prayer during this procedure that the removal of both stents take place and go smoothly, we would sure appreciate it! As I continue to watch Jason fight through these health trials he has battled over the past 2 years with such perseverance, I continue to be so thankful for what an incredible example he has been to me and others in a way honoring to the Lord during such an extremely difficult time!
On a different note, we do have one more prayer request please! Believe Big, an organization that we LOVE and are part of, is hosting a fundraising dinner this Saturday, April 27th. Their focus is on helping families navigate the cancer journey and believing that ALL things are possible with God. In addition to raising funds to continue to help bring hope to others in their fight with cancer, this year they are working on a groundbreaking clinical trial with Johns Hopkins with the use of mistletoe (a natural way to treat cancer that Jason has also been using since his 2nd cancer diagnosis.) We wanted to get a couple urgent prayer requests out there and ask for your help please.
This may come to many as a surprise to many, as our last post was to let everyone know how well the stent was working for Jas since March 1. Well, since then the stent fell out of place and is more than likely sitting in his stomach right now.
So on April 12 we headed back to the hospital with plans to have the 1st stent retrieved and a 2nd stent put into place. Well, things didn't go quite as we planned :) They never do, do they? HAHA. So our Dr. decided to put a stent in that was 2mm larger than the last one. Doesn't seem like a big deal does it? Oh but it was! It was larger than he had even ever been stretched. So, he experienced severe, intense pain from the moment he had the new stent placed :( So the poor guy has felt, "like a dull knife has been stuck in the middle of his back" since April 12. He hasn't been able to sleep laying down in bed since then - having to sit upright in a chair at night and can only sleep for a couple hours at a time due to the intense pain. We know that narcotics just make him sick so he has steered clear of those, but nothing else is giving him much relief. And to make matters worse, it is making all the areas that he was operated on for his esophagectomy feel much worse again... And are you wondering about the stent that fell into his stomach? Well, because of stretching his esophagus to the largest yet for the new stent, our Dr. didn't want to add additional salt to the wound by having to stretch it that wide twice that day to remove the other one. So, the 2nd stent still remains in his stomach.
Now this is where prayer request #1 comes in. Jas heads back to the hospital this Wednesday, April 24 for an 8am appt with plans to remove the stent in his stomach AND the stent that is causing this awful pain. If you could please please blanket him in prayer during this procedure that the removal of both stents take place and go smoothly, we would sure appreciate it! 3/24/13 - The Stent is Working!
Hello Dear Friends and Family! We have some great news to share with you all!
On Friday, March 1, Jas had a stent put in the section of his esophagus that continues to close up and he has been doing fantastic so far. Praise, praise, praise the Lord! We can't tell you what an incredible blessing this is to know that we didn't have to go back to the hospital for another stretching at what has become a routine two week stretching. So So SOOOOOOO wonderful to have a breather! Even better, there have been very few side effects so far. For those of you who remember our unsuccessful go around with a stent about a year ago, Jas was in a LOT of pain to the point where he was on continuous meds and then had an infection occur as well which led to an additional hospital stay shortly after. Not this time! At most, he has been uncomfortable (the first few days.) He hasn't had to take any meds and after the first few days he hasn't even been uncomfortable. SOOOOOOOOOOO WONDERFUL!!! Thank you Jesus for this incredible break of hospital trips, anesthesia and stretchings! We can't tell you how wonderful this break has been for our family!
So, the plan will be to leave the stent in until May 28. At that point we again will pray about what our next course of action and also partner with our medical team on their opinion as well. With a stent in this area, if it is left in any longer than this timeframe your risk of infection increases, so that is the reason behind having to go back in on May 28. Still, 3 months away from the hospital??? Yes!!! That is our longest break from Baltimore in 2 years :)
I did want to share how God continues to keep things into perspective for us! While I was in the waiting room at the last procedure I was talking with some other women and come to find out another man was there for a stretching as well. Here the poor guy, from the age of 3 years old, had to come in monthly to have his esophagus stretched. He is now in his 30s. So for 30 years he has had to come to the hospital monthly and go through the stretching process. Holy Cow! Made these last 2 years seem like such a blink of the eye - cancer or not - compared to 30 years! For some reason a stent wouldn't work for this man so this was his only option. Like I said, God continues to lovingly show us that there are others out there who have harder struggles than the ones we are coping with ourselves.
Another exciting part of the day was getting to partner with a nurse on our team to help support our Believe Big initiative at Univ of MD! Hooray!!! So the Believe Big mugs we continue to hand out to other cancer patients battling cancer, will now be handed out in the GI lab also where cancer patients are scoped, diagnosed and followed up with on a routine basis for multiple types of cancer. We are so grateful and excited to have this partnership with them and to further the outreach of Believe Big's mission in Helping Families Navigate the Cancer Journey in Believing that "Nothing is Impossible with God!"
We celebrated Jason's birthday earlier this month which was HUGE! I feel I have a different perspective on birthdays after what we have gone through. To celebrate him making it to the next year was such an AWESOME gift the Lord gave us! We had a great weekend together, especially after him traveling for work that week. He kicked off his weekend at a Men's Retreat at our church which he really took a lot from. Then we surprised him with some creative artwork, balloons and a hat all hand picked and designed by Taylor :) We enjoyed going out to dinner and a nature hike at the C&O Canal that weekend. Perfect for my outdoorsy man! And Taylor also loved it, which was a plus ;) We also made his favorite - healthy crepes for a treat! Here are a few pics from our special weekend!
Thought I'd include some other pics as some highlights these last couple months.
We were able to get out and do some rain puddle jumping with the yucky weather we've had lately. Reminded me of what our dear friend Kat used to do with her kiddos and it sure was a way to brighten our day!
I loved having an awesome evening with some incredible ladies painting Believe Big mugs together! We are looking forward to impacting 12 more lives, to help bring them hope as they battle cancer. Can't wait to see the finished products :)
Jas was able to flex his work schedule recently, and for the first time in a LONG TIME didn't have to take that day to go to the hospital. It was so nice that he was able to come with us to Taylor's gymnastics and swimming class at the Y. We surprised her let her stay after her class for some open gym play. I think Jas had just as much fun as she did hanging on the rings and climbing the rope :) Taylor said on the way home, "Daddy, when I'm older and work...like 38-39, I want to take 21 days off and spend time with my family." Can you see how much she is loving more time with daddy? Such a gift!
This past Saturday, we took Taylor and Maryssa (a sweet buddy of hers who is like a sister) out to dinner and then to a Beauty and the Beast show put on by a local Middle School nearby. Her reaction when we told her where we were going was PRICELESS! Especially when we told her she would get to wear her Belle costume outside of the house - which we don't let her do. Oh my goodness! Hee hee! So grateful we learned about this show as it saved us a fortunate and was WONDERFUL! Those two girls were in heaven and so adorable to watch how excited they were through it all. They danced around and put on their own show during intermission and of course got a lot of attn from that. But we were blown away with how great of a job the students did in the play! What a great show and wonderful memories to have!
We have started a routine of going out for nature hikes on Sundays after church which has been fun! One Sunday we went to Catoctin Creek Nature Center with Karolyn (a sweet friend of ours that we recently met) and did some rock skipping, stick throwing and snake holding. We have a brave soul on our hands. Wasn't scared a bit! For those of you who participated in our Miles4Wiles walk last year, this is where it was held. Love this place!
Well that's it for now! If you could please continue praying for ultimate healing of Jason's esophagus so that in the future a stent isn't even needed, we would greatly appreciate your support!

1/16/13 - FANTASTIC NEWS!
Hello Everyone! We have FANTASTIC NEWS to share!
Jas scans came back CLEAR!!!! Praise Praise PRAISE THE LORD!!!! What an incredible relief! We are so thankful for the Lord's healing of Jas' body!
One year out from surgery officially with no recurrence. God is so incredibly good!!! Thank u so much for your prayers! Each scan is a HUGE mile marker for us, providing each year he goes with no recurrence, the better his odds are of it not returning. Seems pretty straight forward and really is that simple, as we go through this 'watchful waiting' period. With his type of cancer, there were very high chances of it returning back that first year and the odds greatly reduce each year thereafter. We are thanking Jesus that he has more plans for Jas here on earth :) We now have six more months until we have to go through another round of scans again- hooray!!!
As for his stretching, it went well and he isn't even sore today. Another huge blessing! After talking to our entire team of Doctors yesterday to get their opinion on whether or not to do a stent, we are leaning toward having one put in March. If all goes well, and yes we are trying to erase from our memory what happened last time around with the stent, he will be able to keep his stent in for about 2 months without stretchings during that time. A HUGE break from the every 2 week schedule that we've been on for awhile. Sounds wonderful and appealing right? Well, there are cons to having it as well. Jas could have constant discomfort/pain, as it will be pushing out on his esophagus wall constantly during that time. There is a possibility that it may not be as uncomfortable, since we are a year out from the surgery, and there is a significant build-up scar tissue and less chance of tearing. So, we will continue to pray whether or not to have a stent put in next month and ask for your prayers for God's direction as well!
As we continue to transition back to EST from our big trip, we have removed the stress of scans from the table for awhile which will help tremendously! Even Taylor hasn't been sleeping as well this week, probably feeling the stress that we didn't even know we were bearing.
With that, we hope you all had a Happy Valentine's Day! It was a wonderful day for us celebrating our love for one another and our love of our Heavenly Father :) God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. 1 John 4:9-11

2/12/13 - Urgent Prayer Request
Hello Everyone - We hope you are all off to a very Happy New Year! We have had quite an adventuresome one so far - in a good way :) To celebrate our 11 years of marriage, since we were in the hospital for our big 10 year anniversary, I was able to join Jas on a work trip in Thailand. Wow, wow, wow! What an incredible experience and such a blessing from the Lord that we were able to experience it together! I'll be posting more about our trip in the next couple weeks so stay tuned, more fun stuff coming soon.
On a serious note, we did want to urgently ask for your prayers this week as Jason has another stretching this Friday, February 15th (his 3rd one this year). Immediately after his stretching this Friday he will have his a CAT scan follow up and we will find out that same day the results of the scan. We are praying there will be no cancer anywhere and we will be able to celebrate another MAJOR milestone of being one year out from his surgery with no recurrence!
We are asking for your help PLEASE in praying the specific prayer below for Jason and I daily from now through this Friday to help protect us from the typical stress, fear and anxiety that can easily creep in on a week like this. So far so good, but we have learned that if we aren't as prepared as we possibly can, the reality of follow up scans can slam you when you are least expecting it. (Usually when you think you are doing ok...)
Also, if you can please continue to pray for God's clarity on whether Jas should have a stent put in or not that would be greatly appreciated! Unfortunately his opening to where his new esophagus was "hooked up" is healing in the shape of an oval vs. a circle. And in between stretchings the ends of his opening are staying open but the middle of the oval is closing up, which makes it difficult to get food down because there are two small holes on the ends of the oval vs. one big opening. So, now they are back to tossing out the idea of a stent... We are putting it in God's hands yet again to make it clear to us which way we should proceed.

JASON & MEGAN WILL BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS!
Jason and Megan will be strong and courageous. They will not be discouraged. For you, my Lord are with them wherever they go. Because of Your Word, Jason and Megan are overcomers. They overcome the world, the flesh and the devil by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Greater are You, Lord that is in them than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4, Rev. 12:11) You came that they may have life, and have it in abundance. (John 10:10) You are a shield for them, their glory, and the lifter of their head.(Psalm 3:3) You always lead them in triumphal procession and through them you are able to spread the knowledge of who You are. (2 Cor. 2:14)
Jason and Megan will set their dwelling in and among You, and their soul shall not despise, reject or separate itself from you. (Leviticus 26:11) Amid all these things they are more than a conqueror and gain a surpassing victory through You who love them. (Romans 8:37) No weapon that is formed against them shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against them in judgment You shall show to be in the wrong. This peace, righteousness, security, triumph over opposition is the heritage that they have through You. (Isaiah 54:17)
Though Jason and Megan live in the world, they will not wage war as the world does. The weapons they fight with are not the weapons of the world. They have divine power to demolish strongholds. (2 Corinthians 10:3,4) They will put on the full armor of God so that they can take a stand against the devil’s schemes. They will stand firm with the belt of truth around their waist, with the breastplate of righteousness, their feet ready with peace, the shield of faith to extinguish the arrows from the devil, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is Your word. They will be alert and will always be praying. (Ephesians 6)
JASON & MEGAN WILL HAVE NO FEAR!
You have chosen Jason and Megan and have not rejected them. So Jason and Megan will not fear for you are with them. They will not be dismayed, for you are their God. You will strengthen them and help them; you will uphold them with your righteous right hand….For you are the Lord, my God, who takes hold of their right hand and says “Do not be afraid; I will help you.” (Isaiah 41:9-13)
Jason and Megan praise you because they are fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14) For you created and formed them. They will not be afraid for you have redeemed them. Jason and Megan will be strong and courageous. They will not be discouraged. For you, my Lord are with them wherever they go. (Joshua 1:9) No one will be able to stand up against them all the days of their life. As you were with Daniel – and Joseph – I know you are with them. You will never fail them and you will never leave them. Never.(Joshua 1:5) They will meditate on your Word and will follow you alone. (Joshua 1:8)
Because of Your Word, Jason and Megan are overcomers. They overcome the world, the flesh and the devil by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Greater are You, Lord that is in them than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4, Rev. 12:11) You came that they may have life, and have it in abundance. (John 10:10) You are a shield for them, their glory, and the lifter of their head.(Psalm 3:3) You always lead them in triumphal procession and through them you are able to spread the knowledge of who You are. (2 Cor. 2:14)
Jason and Megan will set their dwelling in and among You, and their soul shall not despise, reject or separate itself from you. (Leviticus 26:11) Amid all these things they are more than a conqueror and gain a surpassing victory through You who love them. (Romans 8:37) No weapon that is formed against them shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against them in judgment You shall show to be in the wrong. This peace, righteousness, security, triumph over opposition is the heritage that they have through You. (Isaiah 54:17)
Though Jason and Megan live in the world, they will not wage war as the world does. The weapons they fight with are not the weapons of the world. They have divine power to demolish strongholds. (2 Corinthians 10:3,4) They will put on the full armor of God so that they can take a stand against the devil’s schemes. They will stand firm with the belt of truth around their waist, with the breastplate of righteousness, their feet ready with peace, the shield of faith to extinguish the arrows from the devil, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is Your word. They will be alert and will always be praying. (Ephesians 6)
JASON & MEGAN WILL HAVE NO FEAR!
You have chosen Jason and Megan and have not rejected them. So Jason and Megan will not fear for you are with them. They will not be dismayed, for you are their God. You will strengthen them and help them; you will uphold them with your righteous right hand….For you are the Lord, my God, who takes hold of their right hand and says “Do not be afraid; I will help you.” (Isaiah 41:9-13)
Jason and Megan praise you because they are fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14) For you created and formed them. They will not be afraid for you have redeemed them. You have called them by name and they are yours. When they pass through the waters, you will be with them; and when they pass through the rivers, it will not sweep over them. When they walk through the fire, they will not be burned; the flames will not set them ablaze. For you are the Lord my God, the Holy One of Israel, their Savior. (Isaiah 43:1-3)
Jason and Megan will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day. (Psalm 91:5) For God did not give them a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7) And they are more than a conqueror through him who loved them. For they are convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate them from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus my Lord. (Romans 8:36-39)
